Apple is fighting back and is changing the way the new iPhone 3G will be activated.

This move is understandable as the grey market of unlocked iPhones is HUGE.According to a recent poll, 58% of existing first generation iPhone owners unlocked there phones so they can access the wide variety of third party applications and use the device on any network..Ā

The average handset is locked by the network mainly to retain you as a customer but with the first iPhone it was to gain new network customers at extortionate rates (£200/$400 + £45/$90 per month !) with the justification that they subsidise the cost of your handset.

ā€If the phones were unlocked it denies Apple and the network in question any of the ongoing usage revenueā€

Although, with the arguably high price of the first iPhone, the second generation ā€˜3g iPhone’ will be available a lot cheaper (Ā£99/$200 + Ā£25/$50 per month) and have 1000’s of readily available applications you can load on to the phone but unfortunately will still be locked to Apples preferred network. O2 here in the UK or AT&T in the States.

SO you ask the question to Apple.

ā€œWhat if I’m not on one of those networks which are selling the new iPhones?ā€

ā€œTough Luck. You are going to have to change networksā€ say apple.

ā€œSod off then. I will buy one unlocked of eBayā€

Ha. Ha. Ha… replies Apple. ā€œYou go and try and get one unlocked. For a start our new 3G iPhone isn’t SIM replaceable. In other words the sim card is manufactured into the phone and is not replaceable by you. This means the phone can only be activated in our stores and even if you did manage to activate it all the settings for your network are hard coded into the device. However you could try to remove the SIM with a hammer. That is, if we have actually put a sim in there !ā€

I know what you are thinking. There is always a hacker out there which will eventually be able to unlock the iPhone for any network. Well, there probably is but I don’t think Apple or the network will give in so easily. They have a lot more to lose this time if the phones do get jail braked. They have lowered the costs of the handsets because they are relying on gaining the extra revenue from the applications which will be sold separately.

Its only a rumour that the new iPhone 3g hasn’t got a slot for the Sim card because of press released pictures on the net from apple themselves. However it would make commonsense and if the rumour is right then its going to make it very hard to use your own sim in it there for very hard to crack.

So NOW what can you do?

Pray to god that the phone does have the simcard slot.

Well I live in the UK, I’m on Vodafone and don’t want to change to O2 because they don’t have a good signal in my area. My only option is to look at other devices such as the HTC Touch Diamond which has just been released. Follow the link above and watch the videos.. It looks good but I still want an iPhone ! !

Please leave your views on this subject below.

Do you have another option ?

Do you think its right on what they are doing ?

Do you know for sure if the iPhone 3G has the card built in or not ?

Apple has not manufactured the sim into the phone. They are providing a tool to pop open the tray.

    Which Country is this in?
In some countries it is illegal to lock the phone to a particular network. So hence they should have the sim card slot.

I personaly cant see them having one with and one without.

I think that this is bull s**t. Why does Apple care so much if we unlock them? We wouldn’t be unlocking them if they had chosen T-Mobile (U.S.) in the first place. AT&T sucks balls man. It is soo retarded. Their rates are super high and to top it off their signal sucks. I use T-Mobile because I use their pre-paid plans. Which are more affordable for me. If AT&T provided a $15 pre-paid/pay-as-you-go option, I’d do that. Their current option for that is ridiculous! $50+what you use. Screw that man. UNLOCKING AND JAILBREAKING ALL THE WAY!

And I don’t think Apple has anything to loose since AT&T pays Apple for the lower price, subsidy. In other words, for every unit sold of iPhone 3G, Apple get paid from us and AT&T, period.

You are right, unlocking iPhone 2 will be extremely hard. Apple deliberately left the keys under the mat for the hackers with iPhone1 so they could make iPhone2 bulletproof.

Probably, this story got about because Apple’s handset releases to carriers for pre-approval were sealed shut. But unlocking (and therefore SIMswapping) is legally required in several countries. iPhone 2’s shown to media representatives included a SIM tool in the box, but no dock.

Seems to me that the only reason Apple is making the iPhone so hard to get, outside the ATT network, is the hype and the fact that everyone wants one!..I say screw Apple…show no interest on the damn thing and see where they are left? easy to say but hard to do..LOL. I know. ATT does suck..their network is poor and the rates are too high. I had to switch to T-mobile because I coulnd’t use my cell phone in my own home…bad reception, or no reception! The way I see it..if i’m paying cold hard cash for something, I better have total control as to what I want to do with it and where I want to do it..it’s my constitutional right!

The rumour is rubbish. Apple have even stated on apple.com that the new iPhone 3G will come with a SIM ejector tool. Why would they provide one if the SIM is built in?

dont worry dodee, they will crack it.. just give them a week….

SIMless is against 3g Standards! so they wont do it…. at most they will hard the sim inside the phone and the guys will have the tools to replace that…

OK, read the fine print. The phone is NOT cheaper! The added cost of the service upgrades, etc., actually make it MORE expensive to use over a 2 year period than the previous iPhone. I think the iPhone is over-rated. The new Google phone seems to be an even better product. get over it! The iPhone is not all that great and there are many new products coming out… that is why Apple is trying so hard to lock people into long term contracts.

It’s OVER for unlockers!! You MUST activate the new iphone in store to buy it, including signing a new 2 year contract with your service provider before setting foot out the door. Who would sign a contract and go home to put in another companys sim? Or try and sell it on ebay when you’ve SIGNED THE CONTRACT? I thought I was going to get less than $100 for my gen 1 iPhone and now their selling “unlocked” for $2-300!

Yeah guys. Whoever published this is way weird. I am a very active iPhone hacker/developer (iPhone hacking website), and I have a hard time thinking that The iPhone Dev Team will crack this one… It’s just that you can’t leave without having AT&T…(read the article on my site)

The only way that I think that we will have au unlocked 3G iPhone is if you buy it off ebay. (WAIT!!! WHAT IF YOU BUY THE IPHONE ONLINE AT AT&T OR APPLE? HOW WOULD YOU ACTIVATE IT THEN?) iTunes that’s where. I think we (the media) got it wrong.

I for one would want to unlock ANY phone I have even though I am happy to sign up to (and honour) any usual 12 (or if arm twisted 18) month contract.
The reason for this is simple - When I am abroad I want to be able to put in a local SIM to make local calls. I tend to use my home SIM to phone back to the UK but want to pay local rates for local calls.
It is crazy for any network to expect otherwise - after all they are still getting my £35 per month even if I am not making any calls with their network.
Apple and O2 need to realise this fact or people will stay away despite the iPhone’s undoubted (to me anyway) appeal.

I wrote it and.. we know there is a simtray in the new iphone but if you read the full article you will have read that it was only a rumour at the time of writing due to facts published on youtube.

You shouldn’t pray, you should take action!
Free The iPhone! Tell Apple, that carrier exclusiveness is harmful to their appstore/itunes revenue model and DONT buy your iphone with a contract from a exclusive carrier.

This is extremly stupid, this is just another way for the billionare owner of AT&T to make a few extra bucks…we should just boycott the damm phone and see if he will rethink his stupid ass decisions… The phone was unlocked once… It will be done again… give it about 24 hours and you’ll see.

Where can you buy this phone in the UK/US without having to sign the contract details there and then
